"Miles Davis was a part of my life from 1947 on, He
was an icon and inspiration and a mentor to me."
- Chick Corea

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

As many of us have already learned, everyone can benefit from interacting with a mentor. Even a 20-time Grammy-winning jazz piano legend Chick Corea had one. There is a clear advantage to mentors as well. They sharpen their skills and expand their networks of contacts by helping aspiring professionals in their fields. In a group mentorship setting, both mentors and mentees have the ability to brainstorm together and learn from each other with the goal of developing networks and relationships that will last for years to come.

This belief was the primary impetus in the creation of the Mentoring Circles at the New York City Bar's Small Law Firm Center. The Mentoring Circles program is ending its second successful year in June and will restart again this September. Currently, we have 6 separate mentoring circle groups (Corporate, General Practice, Litigation, IP, Family Law and Immigration Law). We intend to add 2 additional groups in September of 2014 - Trusts and Estates and Real Estate Law. Due to popular demand, the program will now be subdivided into two sessions. The first one being from September 2014 until January 2015, and the second from February 2015 to June 2015. Previously, members could only join the groups in September, and those who did not register in time had to wait a full year. With this new change, new members will have the opportunity to join continuing members in the group for the spring semester of 2015. The size of each group cannot exceed 30 members, so if you are interested in joining a Mentoring Circle in September of 2014, please be on the look-out for registration to open early this summer.

Don't miss our two important workshops for solos and small firm owners in June. On June 9, bring your own laptop and learn how to create your own email newsletter right in the room during our Hands-On Tech Marketing Breakfast Workshop and on June 19 attend the Small Law Firm Luncheon to learn about the business opportunities through the NYC Bar's Legal Referral.

Wishing all a wonderful summer,

Alla Roytberg

Casemaker: A New Member Benefit

All NYC bar members now have access to Casemaker. So we decided to give Casemaker Support Team members a chance to tell us a little bit about the product.

What is included with Casemaker? Casemaker is divided into federal and state libraries. The State material includes libraries for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Federal Library contains items such as the United States Supreme, Circuit, District and Bankruptcy court opinions; Federal Court Rules; United States Code; Code of Federal Regulations; Federal Rules Decisions, and Constitution. Every State Library at a minimum contains Case law, Statutes, Court Rules, and State Constitution. Your New York libraries include Administrative Code, Attorney General Opinions, New York City Administrative Code, New York City Charter, New York City Local Laws, and Rules as well. New York City Bar members also get access to Casecheck+ which instantly tells you if a case as negative treatment; Casemaker Digest, which gives you weekly summaries of new cases in your practice area and Citecheck, which is a brief analysis tool which tells you if the cases you cited are still good law.

Our Pilot Mentoring Program for Solo and Small Firm Practitioners Continues

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

A number of Association members have been seeking to connect with more experienced lawyers as mentors when handling matters in a particular area of law. In order to provide a means of matching lawyers with potential mentors, the New York City Bar has developed a pilot mentoring program.

This is a joint program of the Small Law Firm Center and the Legal Referral Service. If you believe you would benefit from the guidance of a mentor in a practice area, you may request to be paired up with a mentor, who is a panel member of the Legal Referral Service. Once your mentor is assigned, you can begin your mentor /mentee relationship on the following terms:

1. You may schedule meetings and/or telephone conferences with the mentor, during which you can ask specific substantive legal or practice related questions. For this type of service the mentors who are members of the LRS panel have graciously agreed to accept a reduced hourly fee of $100, which shall be paid by the mentee.

2. You may agree to co-counsel a case with the mentor based upon a mutually beneficial arrangement, which divides the work load and the fees from a particular client, subject to the LRS rules of panel membership.

3. The ability to help on any specific legal matter will depend upon the availability of a suitable mentor at the time that the request is received.
