Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

Now that the law schools have concluded their graduation season, thousands of new lawyers will be joining our profession. While some are fortunate enough to have obtained jobs, many have no salary to look forward to and mountains of debt to manage. After these graduates pass the bar, a record number of them will be making a courageous choice to hang out their shingle and go into their own business. Of course, this expected tidal wave of new solo practitioners may worry many existing small law firm owners. Will our clients leave and take their business to other lawyers, whose hourly fees may be significantly lower than ours? How do many of us, who have become lawyers prior to the high-tech generation, compete with the kids, who are able to accomplish multiple tasks with a click on their phone, iPad or Laptop? How do we remain productive and cost-effective for our clients and how can we expand our client pool? While I would suggest that in a city like New York, legal needs will remain unmet and there will be business for thousands of new lawyers for years to come, this month's Small Law Firm Luncheons hope to help those of you already in solo and small firm practice, to expand your client base and improve the way you do business. On June 11, The Small Law Firm Center will present a luncheon entitled "Mobile Applications to Improve Your Law Life" during which you can learn about most popular and useful mobile apps for lawyers. These apps will improve your bottom line by allowing you to work quickly, on the go and from any location. On June 13, you can learn how to join the largest and the oldest legal referral service in New York State at a luncheon entitled "Business Opportunities through the NYC Bar's Legal Referral Service".

I look forward to seeing you at these events soon.

With Best Wishes,

Alla Roytberg

We are currently in the process of expanding the Small Law Firm Vendor program and would appreciate it if you spread the word and recommend your firm's favorite qualified vendors.

This pilot program has been established by the Small Law Firm Center of the NYC Bar in collaboration with its Committee on Small Law Firms to help members obtain services from Small Business Vendors.

Vendors must provide law-related goods and services in certain specified areas as well as a significant added value to NYC Bar members, which may consist of preferred pricing, expedited or free delivery, extension of volume discounts, product add-ons, free or no fee services, service warranties and guarantees, or the provision of such other items or services that are otherwise not generally available to small law firms.

To qualify as a small business vendor, participant must have had either gross sales under $500,000 or less that 12 full-time employees in a prior calendar year. All vendors are required to provide 2 NYC Bar member references. These references are verified by members of the Committee on Small Law Firms. If you know a vendor who is interested in participating in this directory please send an email to the Small Law Firm Center Director, Alla Roytberg at aroytberg@nycbar.org.

Our Pilot Mentoring Program for Solo and Small Firm Practitioners Continues

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

A number of Association members have been seeking to connect with more experienced lawyers as mentors when handling matters in a particular area of law. In order to provide a means of matching lawyers with potential mentors, the New York City Bar has developed a pilot mentoring program.

This is a joint program of the Small Law Firm Center and the Legal Referral Service. If you believe you would benefit from the guidance of a mentor in a practice area, you may request to be paired up with a mentor, who is a panel member of the Legal Referral Service. Once your mentor is assigned, you can begin your mentor /mentee relationship on the following terms:

1. You may schedule meetings and/or telephone conferences with the mentor, during which you can ask specific substantive legal or practice related questions. For this type of service the mentors who are members of the LRS panel have graciously agreed to accept a reduced hourly fee of $100, which shall be paid by the mentee.

2. You may agree to co-counsel a case with the mentor based upon a mutually beneficial arrangement, which divides the work load and the fees from a particular client, subject to the LRS rules of panel membership.

3. The ability to help on any specific legal matter will depend upon the availability of a suitable mentor at the time that the request is received.

For more information and to apply, email aroytberg@nycbar.org.

Small Law Firm Luncheon
Mobile Applications to Improve Your Law Life
Tuesday, June 11, 2013 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM

It has been reported that more than a third of all lawyers have an iPad. Most lawyers also have a smartphone. Every day, new software for lawyers using these mobile devices is introduced. Increasingly, lawyers can work where ever they want with their mobile devices. But how much real work can a lawyer do on devices with small screens and small processors? Can a lawyer ditch the desktop or laptop pc? In this presentation, John Upton, an attorney and software developer, will demonstrate the most popular and useful mobile applications for lawyers. While participants might not decide to retire their main computers, they certainly will be exposed to applications that will make it easier for them to practice law.

Moderator: Alla Roytberg, Director, Small Law Firm Center, New York City Bar Association

Speakers: John Upton, a sole practitioner of civil rights law for over 30 years, channeled his longtime interest in computer software into the founding of a company to sell movile software for attorneys and others.
