Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

In anticipation of our Small Law Firm Symposium, which will take place on November 8, 2012, I would like to report on the results of this summer's small law firm survey. Nearly 700 of you have responded to the 9 questions aimed at helping us understand and better address the needs of solo and small firm lawyers both during the Symposium and while planning our other programs. Here are some of the main results:

  1. 78% of you work in firms of 5 lawyers or less (27.2% in firms of 2-5 and 50.4% are solo practitioners);
  2. 68% have been admitted to the Bar for over 12 years;
  3. 65% are law firm owners;
  4. 87% are already NYC Bar members;
  5. Most of you have rated CLE programs (61.3%) , the Library (52.5%), Online Legal Services (37.8%), networking events (37.3%) and committee participation (32.4%) as primary services that you find most helpful at the NYC Bar and also cited them as your main reason for joining the Association;
  6. 78 % have never attended the Small Law Firm Symposium, and you rated the following workshops as those that would be of most interest:
    1. Expanding Your Client Base – 314 responses;
    2. Technology Tools for Your Practice – 222 responses;
    3. Growing your Firm While Minimizing Overhead – 219 responses; and
    4. Cost-Effective Marketing – 213 responses.

We took your comments to heart and tailored this year's Small Law Firm Symposium to specifically address your needs. You will find a workshop on each of the above topics as well as many others to help growing small firms succeed.

The November 8, 2012 Small Law Firm Practice Management Symposium at the New York City Bar will help both those of you who are trying to start your new firm in the most cost-effective way and those who are looking to make your existing practice operate more efficiently. Our Pilot Mentoring Program for Solo and Small Firm Practitioners Continues

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

A number of Association members have been seeking to connect with more experienced lawyers as mentors when handling matters in a particular area of law. In order to provide a means of matching lawyers with potential mentors, the New York City Bar has developed a pilot mentoring program.

This is a joint program of the Small Law Firm Center and the Legal Referral Service. If you believe you would benefit from the guidance of a mentor in a practice area, you may request to be paired up with a mentor, who is a panel member of the Legal Referral Service. Once your mentor is assigned, you can begin your mentor /mentee relationship on the following terms:

1. You may schedule meetings and/or telephone conferences with the mentor, during which you can ask specific substantive legal or practice related questions. For this type of service the mentors who are members of the LRS panel have graciously agreed to accept a reduced hourly fee of $100, which shall be paid by the mentee.

2. You may agree to co-counsel a case with the mentor based upon a mutually beneficial arrangement, which divides the work load and the fees from a particular client, subject to the LRS rules of panel membership.

3. The ability to help on any specific legal matter will depend upon the availability of a suitable mentor at the time that the request is received.

For more information and to apply, email aroytberg@nycbar.org.
