2010 NOVEMBER

A NOTE FROM THE SLFC DIRECTOR

"Before beginning, prepare carefully." -Cicero

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

Each year during the month of November, many of you visit the New York City Bar to attend our annual Small Law Firm Practice Management Symposium. This year was no different. Nearly 200 aspiring small firm owners appeared on a rainy November 4 to learn from the experts and to network with other lawyers who have been or are contemplating becoming their own bosses. You received valuable information from vendors who specifically cater to the needs of small firms and have had your law practice management questions answered by those who have already ˇ§done it allˇ¨. Most importantly, many of you have had the opportunity to appreciate the value of the small law firm community at the New York City Bar. It provides a crucial support network for small firm practitioners who need a place to brainstorm and share the trials and tribulations of their professional lives. I thank you for coming and for making the Symposium a success.

Small law firm focused programming at the New York City Bar is not limited to our annual symposium. During the month of November we continue our evening Wine and Cheese Series for Growing Small Firms with a program on November 16, 2010 entitled ˇ§Legal Research Options for Growing Solos and Small Firmsˇ¨. The cost of $15 for members is nominal and includes the Wine and Cheese Networking Reception followed by an informative program. The networking reception provides you with the opportunity to exchange ideas and business cards and hopefully generate client referrals. Please do not miss this valuable opportunity.

In addition, we continue our monthly Small Law Firm Luncheon Series with a program on November 16 entitled ˇ§Using Pricing and Billing to Attract and Keep Clientsˇ¨. For those of you who have missed or would like to delve deeper into the issues surrounding creative billing options that we have touched upon during the Billing Practices Roundtable at the Symposium, this program is not to be missed.

So please mark your calendars and make November 16 your Small Law Firm Improvement Day by spending the afternoon with us first during lunch and then in the evening.

Best wishes for a productive month of November
and a restful Thanksgiving holiday,

Alla Roytberg

When Building a Solo Practice, Remember What You Already Know

Launching a solo legal practice can be exciting but also daunting. The tasks ahead include not just legal work for clients, but also managing files and systems, cultivating relationships, and marketing your practice. To those attorneys coming from larger law offices where these other functions were handled by support and professional staff, the adjustment to the role of business manager may not be easy.

But you are not starting from scratch. This article describes two of the most important aspects of building a practice, client development and office management, and suggests how you may already be positioned to succeed. By focusing on the knowledge you already have, a project that once seemed overwhelming can actually become enjoyable.
