2014 MAY

ˇ§It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old, they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams.ˇ¨
ˇV Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the world famous writer who passed away a few weeks ago, urged us to follow our dreams in order to remain vibrant as human beings. Throughout adult lives most of us spend the bulk of waking hours at work, and it behooves us to fill those hours with worthwhile and rewarding pursuits.

As solos and small firm owners we know what it is like to feel frustration with administrative tasks, disappointment when a bill is unpaid and anxiety when the scheduled daily "to do" list is continuously moved to tomorrow and then tomorrow again. But we also know the feeling of excitement when we succeed in helping a client in a compelling case, which we would be unable to undertake as a member of a larger law firm. We know the youthful and happy feeling when we decide to creatively move our practice in a new direction or embark on a novel professional journey. For us, the dreams, though they may get revised from time to time, are always there, and we are always in pursuit of them.

To support our success, beginning May 1, the New York City Bar has added a valuable benefit ˇV remote online access to Casemaker, a comprehensive legal research system. This benefit is available to members free of charge. To learn more about Casemaker click here.

Wishing all a happy month of May,

Alla Roytberg

Our Pilot Mentoring Program for Solo and Small Firm Practitioners Continues

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

A number of Association members have been seeking to connect with more experienced lawyers as mentors when handling matters in a particular area of law. In order to provide a means of matching lawyers with potential mentors, the New York City Bar has developed a pilot mentoring program.

This is a joint program of the Small Law Firm Center and the Legal Referral Service. If you believe you would benefit from the guidance of a mentor in a practice area, you may request to be paired up with a mentor, who is a panel member of the Legal Referral Service. Once your mentor is assigned, you can begin your mentor /mentee relationship on the following terms:

1. You may schedule meetings and/or telephone conferences with the mentor, during which you can ask specific substantive legal or practice related questions. For this type of service the mentors who are members of the LRS panel have graciously agreed to accept a reduced hourly fee of $100, which shall be paid by the mentee.

2. You may agree to co-counsel a case with the mentor based upon a mutually beneficial arrangement, which divides the work load and the fees from a particular client, subject to the LRS rules of panel membership.

3. The ability to help on any specific legal matter will depend upon the availability of a suitable mentor at the time that the request is received.

For more information and to apply, email aroytberg@nycbar.org.
