2014 MARCH

"To become spring, means accepting the risk of winter."
ˇV Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

This spring thousands of new lawyers will be admitted to the Bar of the State of New York. Because of the economics of the legal market, many of them will immediately start their own law practice. For existing solo and small firm practitioners, this reality may seem somewhat disconcerting. After all, new graduates with minimal experience will compete for the same clients and probably offer to do work at lower fees. However, it is in the interest of the legal profession, as a whole, to help them succeed. They need mentors to learn how to practice law and how to run a business. The NYC Barˇ¦s Report of the Task Force on New Lawyers in a Changing Profession has already tackled many of these issues and made sweeping recommendations, but part of the responsibility to help young lawyers will also fall upon the shoulders of those who already own and run their successful small law firms. While the benefit for new lawyers is obvious, the professional, ethical and even financial reward for experienced law firm owners cannot be overstated. By helping young solos we will not only uphold the quality and the ethics of the legal profession. We will also network and enlarge the pool of referral sources. Young lawyers will be eager to refer clients and co-counsel cases and even gratefully provide some free or low-cost legal work in exchange for learning the trade. The New York City Bar already offers enormous support for new law firm owners, which includes mentoring circles, one-on-one mentorship through the Legal Referral Service, a low cost virtual law firm presence, free legal research in the library and free use of our conference rooms to meet clients. I urge experienced solo and small firm owners to participate as formal and informal mentors and help those of the recent law school grads, who had to hang out their shingle, succeed in private practice.

Wishing all a warmer month of March,

Alla Roytberg

Our Pilot Mentoring Program for Solo and Small Firm Practitioners Continues

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

A number of Association members have been seeking to connect with more experienced lawyers as mentors when handling matters in a particular area of law. In order to provide a means of matching lawyers with potential mentors, the New York City Bar has developed a pilot mentoring program.

This is a joint program of the Small Law Firm Center and the Legal Referral Service. If you believe you would benefit from the guidance of a mentor in a practice area, you may request to be paired up with a mentor, who is a panel member of the Legal Referral Service. Once your mentor is assigned, you can begin your mentor /mentee relationship on the following terms:

1. You may schedule meetings and/or telephone conferences with the mentor, during which you can ask specific substantive legal or practice related questions. For this type of service the mentors who are members of the LRS panel have graciously agreed to accept a reduced hourly fee of $100, which shall be paid by the mentee.

2. You may agree to co-counsel a case with the mentor based upon a mutually beneficial arrangement, which divides the work load and the fees from a particular client, subject to the LRS rules of panel membership.

3. The ability to help on any specific legal matter will depend upon the availability of a suitable mentor at the time that the request is received.
