“Everything you need to know you have learned
through your journey” – Paulo Coelho

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

On May 12, 2012 ninety-five of you attended our Small Law Firm Luncheon on the Necessities of Starting Your Own Practice. The majority of attendees were lawyers with over 10 years of legal experience, who were all on the verge of starting their own firms. What does that tell us about the marketplace? Are large firms terminating positions of mid-level associates? Are certain practice areas “drying up”? Are there too many lawyers being graduated from law schools? It is certainly true that many lawyers are hanging out their shingles due to necessity rather than entrepreneurial drive. And yet, for some, being one's own boss has a lot to offer, flexible hours, different choice of clients or practice areas, and maybe the freedom to write a novel. The important thing is to feel inspired and invigorated as you embark on this new journey, and then, success will be near.

Of Course, at the NYC Bar we are here to help with our Small Law Firm Luncheons, networking groups (email your practice area to aroytberg@nycbar.org to join one), practice management consultations (email aroytberg@nycbar.org to schedule), pilot mentorship program, and our yearly Law Practice Management Symposium, which will take place on November 8, 2012. Don't miss the opportunity to take advantage of all of these as well as of our Library and Small Law Firm Center free conference rooms. Join a committee, get involved in pro bono opportunities and spend time mingling with other similarly situated lawyers. Who knows, maybe you will start a new firm together?

Best wishes for a happy summer,

Alla Roytberg

Our Pilot Mentoring Program for Solo and Small Firm Practitioners Continues

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

A number of Association members have been seeking to connect with more experienced lawyers as mentors when handling matters in a particular area of law. In order to provide a means of matching lawyers with potential mentors, the New York City Bar has developed a pilot mentoring program.

This is a joint program of the Small Law Firm Center and the Legal Referral Service. If you believe you would benefit from the guidance of a mentor in a practice area, you may request to be paired up with a mentor, who is a panel member of the Legal Referral Service. Once your mentor is assigned, you can begin your mentor /mentee relationship on the following terms:

1. You may schedule meetings and/or telephone conferences with the mentor, during which you can ask specific substantive legal or practice related questions. For this type of service the mentors who are members of the LRS panel have graciously agreed to accept a reduced hourly fee of $100, which shall be paid by the mentee.

2. You may agree to co-counsel a case with the mentor based upon a mutually beneficial arrangement, which divides the work load and the fees from a particular client, subject to the LRS rules of panel membership.

3. The ability to help on any specific legal matter will depend upon the availability of a suitable mentor at the time that the request is received.

For more information and to apply, email aroytberg@nycbar.org.
