Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,
Welcome to 2012. It is a new year, full of fresh hopes and ideas, daring beginnings and creative ventures. Whether you are starting a new small law firm or changing direction of your existing practice there are so many options, so many new possibilities and variations on how you can make it uniquely your own and make it succeed.
The New York City Bar has been a home for many of you in 2011 and we will continue to do so in 2012. The Joint Mentorship program between the Small Law Firm Center and the Legal Referral Service has paired many new solo practitioners with seasoned lawyers in their practice areas of interest. Our monthly Small Law Firm Luncheons continue with an important one on January 12 entitled "Untangling the 'Tax Knot' for the Small Law Firm and Solo Practitioner". The networking groups are meeting every month as people continue to help each other perfect their law practice management and get new clients. Don't forget to take advantage of member benefits and special CLE discounts for small firm lawyers. Help others by participating in the City Bar Justice Center's pro bono projects and become active on a committee of your choice. All of this cumulatively, will help your practice thrive.
Finally, please contact me with your comments and suggestions and also if you would like a practice management consultation for your brand new or existing small law firm.
With Best Regards,

Our Pilot Mentoring Program for Solo and Small Firm Practitioners Continues
Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,
A number of Association members have been seeking to connect with more experienced lawyers as mentors when handling matters in a particular area of law. In order to provide a means of matching lawyers with potential mentors, the New York City Bar has developed a new pilot mentoring program.
This is a joint program of the Small Law Firm Center and the Legal Referral Service. If you believe you would benefit from the guidance of a mentor in a practice area, you may request to be paired up with a mentor, who is a panel member of the Legal Referral Service. Once your mentor is assigned, you can begin your mentor /mentee relationship on the following terms:
1. You may schedule meetings and/or telephone conferences with the mentor, during which you can ask specific substantive legal or practice related questions. For this type of service the mentors who are members of the LRS panel have graciously agreed to accept a reduced hourly fee of $100, which shall be paid by the mentee.
2. You may agree to co-counsel a case with the mentor based upon a mutually beneficial arrangement, which divides the work load and the fees from a particular client, subject to the LRS rules of panel membership.
3. The ability to help on any specific legal matter will depend upon the availability of a suitable mentor at the time that the request is received.
