2014 APRIL

A NOTE FROM THE SLFC DIRECTOR

"Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's
coming attractions." - Albert Einstein

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

Springtime inevitably greets us with fresh green shoots and budding flowers after an incredibly long and harsh New York winter. As we remove our hats and gloves and begin to breathe in warmer air, we are ready for new energy, new ideas and creative solutions. In order to run a vibrant business we need to constantly improve and reinvent ourselves, and it is wonderful to have the opportunity to do so. After all, many of us started our own law firms precisely because doing so gave us the flexibility to take bold steps, make our own decisions and play an active role in molding and sculpting the future course of our business and personal lives. Simply stated, the purpose of the springtime programs at the Small Law Firm Center is to help provide ideas and support to your burgeoning practice. Find out how you free valuable time during our April 23 breakfast workshop entitled "Taming the E-mail Dragon: How to Make E-mail Permanently Manageable". Learn how to create "Business Plans for Sustainable Growth" during the luncheon on April 24. Bring your laptop and set up your own blog during our April 28th breakfast workshop entitled "Hands-on Tech Marketing Workshop for Solo and Small Firm Practitioners Part I ˇV Hands-On Blogging Workshop". Further programs on creating and improving your Linked-In presence and creating an electronic newsletter will follow in May and June. So put on your creative hats and get to work. The results will speak for themselves.

With best regards,

Alla Roytberg

Supporting Solos and Small Firms
By Carey R. Dunne, City Bar President

One of the fastest-growing segments of the New York City Bar Associationˇ¦s membership is solo and small-firm practitioners. This fact tracks one of the findings in our report on "New Lawyers in a Changing Profession," which is that the number of new lawyers practicing in very small firms or as solo practitioners has doubled since 2007.

NYC Bar Member Exclusive Virtual Law Firm Program
"Member Exclusive VLF"

  • Are you a solo practitioner who needs a virtual office?
  • Do you already pay for a virtual office, but attend NYC Bar networking events, use the NYC Bar library for research and meet clients in the Small Law Firm Center Conference Rooms?
  • Are you a law firm that would like a Midtown Manhattan Office presence?

The NYC Bar is uniquely positioned to offer its members so much more than a mere "office presence", a "maildrop" or an "address"! Some of you already use the Small Law Firm Center free conference rooms of our prestigious historic landmark building to meet clients. Some of you already participate in our committees, attend our luncheons, CLEs and networking events. Some or you already take part in our Legal Referral Service and Mentorship programs. Now you can complete the picture by having a virtual office at your New York City Bar home as well. For a mere $75 per month add-on to your dues, you can:

  • Provide your clients with your personal Manhattan Address, e.g. "The Law Firm of John Smith, 43 West 43rd Street, NY NY"
  • Your mail and deliveries (up to 250 pieces of mail per month included, $0.10 for each additional piece) will be collected and retained for your pickup in a secure location and can be retrieved by you Monday-Friday during the Libraryˇ¦s open hours (Mon-Thurs 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM; Fri 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM)
  • Mail detail (daily description of mail origin) - $15 per month additional
  • Mail can be forwarded to an address of your choice (shipping & handling charges apply - postage marked up 30%, handling fees are $2.50-$7.00)
  • You can network with other Virtual Law Firm members of the NYC Bar through an exclusive VLF LinkedIn group.
  • If you sign up by April 15 and prepay for 1 year in advance, you will receive a one month discount ($825 instead of $900) and one free pass to a Small Law Firm Networking Luncheon of your choice. Payments must made by Visa, Mastercard or American Express.

Small Law Firm Practice Development and Time Management Breakfast
Taming the Email Dragon: How to Make Email Permanently Manageable
Wednesday, April 23, 2014; 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Attendance fee includes breakfast

The dollar value of the 600+ hours a year you spend on email can easily reach six figures - and yet a huge percentage of those hours are lost because of less-than-optimal email folder organization, poor subject line and body content writing, and the lack of clear standards regarding distribution. Fortunately, these problems all have solutions. Learn to organize your inbox using subfolders and automatic rules properly; write succinct subject lines and body content that get better results from your readers; establish effective expectations for the distribution of email throughout your organization; and prevent common email mistakes.
Get in control of your email again (or for the first time), reduce the amount of email you have to handle, recoup hundreds of hours of wasted time, improve productivity and strengthen your relationships with clients and colleagues.

Our Pilot Mentoring Program for Solo and Small Firm Practitioners Continues

Dear Solo and Small Firm Practitioners,

A number of Association members have been seeking to connect with more experienced lawyers as mentors when handling matters in a particular area of law. In order to provide a means of matching lawyers with potential mentors, the New York City Bar has developed a pilot mentoring program.

This is a joint program of the Small Law Firm Center and the Legal Referral Service. If you believe you would benefit from the guidance of a mentor in a practice area, you may request to be paired up with a mentor, who is a panel member of the Legal Referral Service. Once your mentor is assigned, you can begin your mentor /mentee relationship on the following terms:

1. You may schedule meetings and/or telephone conferences with the mentor, during which you can ask specific substantive legal or practice related questions. For this type of service the mentors who are members of the LRS panel have graciously agreed to accept a reduced hourly fee of $100, which shall be paid by the mentee.

2. You may agree to co-counsel a case with the mentor based upon a mutually beneficial arrangement, which divides the work load and the fees from a particular client, subject to the LRS rules of panel membership.

3. The ability to help on any specific legal matter will depend upon the availability of a suitable mentor at the time that the request is received.

For more information and to apply, email aroytberg@nycbar.org.
