CITY BAR CHORUS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

Gala Performance Set for November 15th

The New York City Bar Chorus is celebrating its 20th year of serving the community, and will mark that milestone with a gala performance at the City Bar on November 15th. Since 1993, New York’s only “all-legal” chorus, acting as a goodwill ambassador for the New York City Bar Association, has put on more than 200 concerts at senior residences, homeless shelters, AIDS and cancer patient residences, and pediatric and rehab facilities around the city. The Chorus, directed by Kathryn E. Schneider and accompanied by Matthew V. Grieco, has also sung for luminaries of the bench and bar and appeared on local and national television. Read more.

U.S. Officials: Aside from Traffic Woes, UN Benefits NYC

"With the two-week General Assembly set to begin this week, UN officials are reminding residents that its presence has tangible positive effects, including major boosts to the local economy and New York's stature as a world-class city....A New York City Bar Association committee has encouraged the city to take greater advantage of the UN's powerful presence. 'The United Nations and the diplomatic community play an important role in the life, economy and image of New York City, even though by definition they do not take part in the local political discourse nor do they represent a voting bloc,' the committee said in a study published this year. According to the study, the UN's economic impact on the city exceeds $1 billion a year, and the East River campus draws up to a million visitors."

Advocates Outline Benefits of Access to Civil Legal Services for the Poor

"Expanding civil legal services for the indigent in New York will have far-reaching benefits for education, health care, criminal justice and the economy, according to witnesses at a hearing convened Thursday by Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman…[Elizabeth] Becker was followed by brief presentations from Fern Fisher, deputy chief administrative judge of New York City courts and from Carey Dunne, a partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell and president of the New York City Bar.... Dunne touted the pro bono work of New York attorneys, especially in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, and said that pro bono should continue to be a part of providing civil legal services."
