An eldery homeless man who faced a long battle to receive disability benefits

Mr. H. first came to an Elderlaw Project legal clinic at a senior center in late 2005 seeking assistance in filing a claim for disability benefits. He was homeless and had suffered from a long history of physical and mental illnesses. Paul Rooney from Reed Smith LLP assisted Mr. H. at the clinic by advising him on how to apply for social security benefits and eventually helped Mr. H. file a petition for such benefits. After the petition was denied by the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review, Paul took an appeal.

When Paul left the firm, the case was continued by his Reed Smith colleague, Casey Laffey. As the Appellate Review board had remanded the case back to the lower court for a new hearing, Casey had the chance to help Mr. H. present his case to an administrative law judge. Finally, after a hard fought battle, and almost three years, Mr. H. won his case and was awarded a over $70,000 worth of benefits dating back to 2003 as well as benefits moving forward.

This decision will hopefully allow Mr. H. to get an apartment and get his life back on track. He is extremely grateful to the firm for the result.
