NYC Know Your Rights Project

In October 2008, a petition signed by nearly 100 detainees at the Varick Federal Detention Facility in lower Manhattan arrived at the City Bar Justice Center. The petition complained of "grave human rights abuses."

Just six weeks later, in December 2008, the City Bar Justice Center organized a pilot project--in collaboration with The Legal Aid Society and the American Immigration Lawyers Association's New York Chapter--to bring pro bono attorneys into the Varick Facility. Based on interviews with 158 detainees, we found that 39.2% had possible meritorious claims for relief from removal.
