PAYBACK: THE CASE FOR REVENGE
Are Vengeance and Justice So Very Different After All?

Thursday, April 25, 2013 6:00 pm-7:30 pm

Event has expired. Registration for this event is no longer available.

We have all been taught that revenge is primitive and barbaric and that citizens should instead place their faith in the justice system.  But is vengeance and justice so very different after all?  By punishing wrongdoers, shouldn’t we also be trying to avenge crime victims?  And vengeance is only morally justified if it is proportionate and commensurate, so how is that any different from what the legal system purports to provide?  Join the City Bar Association for a lively discussion about the relationship between vengeance and justice, on the occasion of Fordham law professor Thane Rosenbaum’s latest book, PAYBACK: THE CASE FOR REVENGE.

Moderator: THANE ROSENBAUM, Professor, Fordham Law School

Speakers: BENJAMIN BRAFMAN, Brafman & Associates, P.C.; HON. DENNY CHIN, Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit; KATHLEEN HOGAN, District Attorney, Warren County; Past President, NYS District Attorneys Association; DANIEL JONAH GOLDHAGEN, author of "Worse Than War" and "Hitler's Willing Executioners"

Sponsored by: Committee on Books-at-the-Bar, Thomas M. Ross, Chair; Co-sponsored by Forum on Law, Culture & Society

Event Location: 42 West 44th St. (bet. 5th & 6th Ave.)
