LGBT Asylum Training 101: Preparing the Case & Effective Representation in Immigration Court
Tuesday, March 26, 2013 6:00 pm-7:30 pm

Event has expired. Registration for this event is no longer available.

In many places of the world, LGBT people are terrorized, beaten and killed because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. For those who are able to flee to the U.S., the fear of such brutal mistreatment may make for a strong asylum claim. As the number of these claims grows each year, there is an increasing need for qualified lawyers who can handle them. The LGBT Rights Committee of the New York City Bar is pleased to sponsor this panel, during which you will learn from leading attorneys at Immigration Equality and the City Bar Justice Center how to represent an LGBT asylum seeker and hear the perspective from the bench. Attendees will have the opportunity after the training to pick up pro bono casework from Immigration Equality or the City Bar Justice Center and may earn up to 10 CLE hours per reporting cycle for doing so. Written materials, mentoring from experienced attorneys and other resources to assist pro bono counsel will be available from Immigration Equality and the City Bar Justice Center throughout the representation.

Speakers: HON. NOEL ANN BRENNAN, Immigration Judge, Executive Office for Immigration Review, United States Department of Justice; JENNIFER KIM, Director, Refugee Assistance Program, City Bar Justice Center; AARON MORRIS, Staff Attorney, Immigration Equality

Sponsored by: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights Committee, Jordan Backman, Chair

Co-sponsored by: City Bar Justice Center and Immigration Equality

Please register by March 22.
