The Rapidly Thawing Arctic: Opportunities and Challenges
Monday, March 11, 2013 6:00 pm-8:30 pm

Event has expired. Registration for this event is no longer available.

The speakers will address the myriad issues and concerns raised by the fact that the Arctic Ocean is rapidly thawing, and how they are being addressed—or not: governance issues (law of the sea, competing jurisdictional claims over land and water, national security issues, fishing rights, role of indigenous peoples and local government, the Arctic Council); commercial and maritime issues (new transport and shipping routes, maritime insurance and rescue concerns, oil and gas drilling possibilities); environmental issues (hazards from commercialization such as oil spills and pollution, natural resources protection and preservation, exacerbation of global warming). The program is meant to provide a "sampler" of the many issues and concerns which arise as a result of this natural phenomenon for policy makers, attorneys and for the public in general.

Speakers: KEITH MORRILL, Director, Oceans and Environmental Law Division, Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada; STEPHANIE L. PFIRMAN, Professor of Environmental Science and Hirschorn Professor of Environmental and Applied Sciences, Barnard College, Columbia University; MICHAEL SHEWCHUK, Legal Officer, Division of Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, Office of Legal Affairs, United Nations; CAPTAIN PETER TROEDSSON, United States Coast Guard, Military Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations
