It was no ordinary first day of school on September 4, 1957; Elizabeth Eckford and Hazel Bryan wore special outfits for the occasion. It was an historic moment – the first day of integration at Arkansas’ Little Rock Central High School. The photograph of these teenagers has been a haunting reminder of the suffering endured by civil rights’ pioneers. African American Elizabeth can be seen stoically attempting to enter school while white student, Hazel, relentlessly taunts her. Margolick’s book uses that iconic picture to chronicle the aftermath of one of the era’s most memorable images. Join us for a reception, book discussion, and signing.
